Grit and determination.....

By Pradeep Gupta

The terrorists may have brought death to more than 180 people, but there are those for whom the ordeal of living continues. They were so badly injured in the 26/11 attack that they have become handicapped and cannot run their families or even their own lives.
One of these victims is Appasaheb Maruti Patil (27), who was a private security guard at the Hotel Trident. More than 30 people were killed at the Hotel Trident Oberoi, some of whom were his colleagues. Lucky to be alive even after getting four bullets, and bravely saving so many lives, Patil is today without a job.
As the staff and guests fled towards the service exits, the terrorists, Fahad Ullah and Abdullah Rehman, anticipating that some would try to escape from that route, blocked that area and opened fire and killed those they could see. The survivors rushed and hid in the service room but were noticed by the killers who entered the place and began shooting at them.
A guest and two of Patil’s colleagues, Sarjirao Bhosale (27), and Wilson Mandlik (25), died where they were crouching.
In the continuous firing, Patil and another female staff member too got struck by bullets but miraculously survived. Patil was courageous enough to dial 100 to inform the police, but the line was constantly busy. He then called up his colleagues inside the hotel, telling them that he and a female staff member had been shot and needed help. With two bullets in the chest, one in the abdomen and one in his left hand, Patil remained in the ICU for almost a month.
After the incident, Patil’s employers, Monitorn G4S paid him Rs.5 lakh as compensation and also felicitated him with a bravery award. But being shot while on the job has left him handicapped and incapacitated. He was the only son and the only earning member of the family. With medical costs and daily household expenditures mounting, he wonders whether the terrorists made a mistake by not finishing him off.

Three reasons why the terrorists were delayed….(…and thus lives were saved at CST and other places)

By Pradeep Gupta

It’s a normal thing for Mumbaikars to curse traffic snarls, the lack of a sea route to their offices and the state of public loos. Perhaps we had better re-think our opinions.
For, according to the Mumbai police, three factors caused delays in the launch of the terror attack on the city. The original plan was to start the carnage between 7 and 8 p.m. But the inflatable dinghy the terrorists used betrayed them by going too slow, the traffic held them up once they got into taxis, and finally, the public loo at CST seemed to entrance the two who reached there so much that they spent nearly half an hour inside!
On November 26, a Wednesday, Mumbai came under attack at around 9.30pm. By then, the majority of office goers from the central business district had already left for their homes. Imagine the toll that the group could have inflicted during peak hours, with casualties probably approaching thousands. As it is, this brazen attack claimed 188 people’s lives while more than 250 were injured.
According to Crime Branch officials, the terrorists came from Karachi through the sea route to within 12 nautical miles in the mother ship. They then hijacked a trawler, the Kuber, after hoisting a SOS flag. At four nautical miles they switched to rubber dinghies.
When they were four miles away from Mumbai, they dumped the Kuber, having killed her Indian crew, and used inflatable rubber dinghies for the last stretch. However, they had failed to take a very simple fact into account – the weight of their weaponry. The result was that it slowed them down so much that the dinghies took two hours longer to reach than anticipated.
According to officials, six of the 10 terrorists landed at Badhwar Park near Cuffe Parade, while the other four continued to Sassoon Docks. These were the four who were set to go to the Taj Mahal Hotel and Nariman House. On the way two of them paused at Leopold to start the operation off, before fleeing to the Taj. The others split into groups of two each as per their plan and then hired taxis and set out on their missions of death. But the heavy traffic further delayed them.
According to officials connected with investigation, “Kasab revealed that they were running very late for their deadly operation. And then his colleague, Ismail Khan, who finally died at Chowpatty, spent around half an hour in the suburban section toilet, refreshing himself before embarking on his murderous spree.”
By the time he got out and the terrorists started using their AK 47s, much of the crowd had already left for home. But there were more than enough for the men to attack, crowds of poor people waiting for later trains, families waiting in the main section to go outstation.
For them, neither traffic jam, nor heavy dinghies or visits to the loo proved saviors.

Box:
Capacity of rubber dinghies

Both weight and wind conspired to delay the terrorists, according to the officials of the crime branch.
And according to Abhijit Mayekar, Project Manager of Aarav Offshore Services involved in the dinghy business and who has also seen the dinghy used by the terrorists, “The boat used by them had a capacity of 10 to 12 people. But they were carrying huge quantities of arms, ammunition, grenades and other supplies, and this caused the slowdown that made them reach their destination late.”
Normally, depending upon the engine, the dinghies vary between capacity of 4 to 12 people, going at speeds of from 6 to 12 nautical miles an hour. Ordinarily, the boat should have reached in one hour. Instead, it took much longer.

Taj to keep it simple

The management of the Taj Hotel has decided to be simple on this sombre though significant occasion of the 26/11 anniversary. Two prayer meetings have been organised in memory of those who fell victims to the terrorist bullets that day.
According to Nikhila Palat, Public Relations Manager, Taj, they have organised morning and evening prayers, to be attended by the hotel staff only. The Hotel had also barred guests, including victims’ relatives and the media, Palat said.
From among the ten terrorists who had infiltrated the city, Shohaib, Javed, Hafiz Arshad and Nasir targeted the Taj
The extensive damages caused to the hotel over the nearly three fateful days can be gauged from the fact that repair work on the first, fifth and sixth floors is still going on and may take some more time.
Meanwhile, the famed Golden Dragon Restaurant reopened yesterday after one year. The restaurant had been badly damaged in the attacks.

‘BOSS’ TRACED !

Cyber cops break phishing gang

By Pradeep Gupta

The Cyber Cell of Mumbai Police has managed to trace the mastermind of bank account phishing nicknamed ‘Boss’, who is alleged to be involved in several phishing cases across the country.
A reference to ‘Boss’ turned up during interrogation by Cyber Cell officials of four persons who had been arrested earlier. The officials traced his mobile phone signals to Delhi and a special team is already headed there.
Suresh Kolati had registered a complaint on August 5 with the ICICI Bank’s main office at Hyderabad claiming that someone had withdrawn Rs.25,000 and Rs.21,000 from his account by hacking his password.
The bank informed their vigilance team who set out to crack the case. Meanwhile, on August 8, the ICICI staffers at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) received a call from an informer tipping them off that an accused involved in bank account hacking cases would be coming to Carter Road.
Accordingly, the BKC Cyber Cell, which is located just opposite the ICICI building, was informed and a trap was laid at the site from 3.30 pm onwards. At 8.30 pm Ganesh Agrawal and Irfan Sheikh landed there and were arrested by the Cyber Cell officials.
Their interrogation led to Nigerians -- Fidilist Khichan and Kevin Obina Khichan who were later arrested from Chembur station.
According to Sunil Ghosalkar, the Police Inspector of Cyber Cell, “Ganesh Agrawal had been for some years in Malaysia where he met some Nigerians. After coming back to India he joined their gang. Ganesh would provide the details of the account holders and forward the same to other Nigerians in India. These Nigerians would send the information to their bosses in Nigeria who hacked into the account from there and provide the passwords to the counterparts in India, who would then withdraw money from their account.”
The officials have recovered a diary from the accused which has details of accounts belonging to several people. “We are planning to write to the concerned banks to approach us if they have such cases. We hope that after their interrogation, we will solve other such bank account hacking and fraud cases,” added Goshalkar.
However, the police is waiting for the arrest of the mastermind ‘Boss’ whose arrest may help them crack many cases of phishing.

What is Phishing?

Phishing is an e-mail fraud method in which the perpetrator sends out email in an attempt to gather personal and financial information from recipients. Typically, the messages appear to come from trustworthy websites. Web sites that are frequently spoofed by phishers include PayPal, eBay, MSN, Yahoo, BestBuy, etc. A phishing expedition, like the fishing expedition it's named for, is a speculative venture: the phisher puts the lure hoping to fool at least a few of the prey that encounter the bait. Phishers use a number of different social engineering and e-mail spoofing ploys to try to trick their victims.

‘Game show’ inside Bhiwandi Ganesh pandal

Pic By PAWS
By Pradeep Gupta

Bhiwandi has the dubious distinction of having a Ganesh pandal inside which animals were confined and treated cruelly. Two cobras were being constantly prodded or smacked with a stick to make them aggressively open their hoods to devotees. Two pigeons with their feet tied were also kept inside the pandal for added effect.

Interestingly, the pandal, Swargiya late Nan Mitra Mandal, belongs to Shiv Sena leader Sainath Pawar.

A snake charmer wearing saffron robes was seated inside torturing the cobras, hitting them on the head to prevent them from curling up in the small basket. This was being done to allow the continuous stream of visitors see the snakes with their hoods open.

The pigeons in the meanwhile, struggled to keep their distance from the cobras.

On being tipped off, the Mumbai based PAWS (Plant & Animals Welfare Society) Mumbai lodged a complaint with the Forest Department and the Thane Police, alleging that a Bhiwandi based Ganesh Mandal was violating the laws pertaining to wild and protected animals laws by illegally keeping two cobras and birds to attract devotees and visitors.

Sunish Subramanian, the PAWS-Mumbai activist who made the complaint said, “On Monday after we got information about the cruel treatment of protected creatures, we went across to Bhiwandi and found devotees inside the pandal taking blessings from a cobra and putting cash offering in a box. The cobra was constantly prodded to say upright. The snake charmer, Dhulanath had brought the cobras from MP. A cobra is protected under Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and comes under Schedule – I animals.”

However, the surprising thing is that when the Forest Department officials raided the pandal, they found no animals or birds present. Obviously, the mandal was tipped off by someone from inside the law enforcement department.

When our reporter asked Sainath Pawar about the cobras and the pigeons, he denied any involvement, saying. “We did not call any snake charmer to display the cobras. The man came here uninvited, and sat in our pandal. When our workers saw him they send him out.”

However, when confronted with the photographic evidence provided by the NGO and asked how come he was aware about the man occupying his pandal with the pigeons and the cobras from two full days, Pawar refused to make any comment.

Awrness message sent by CBI, sent Buta Singh son behind bar

By Pradeep Gupta

The awareness message sent by the state Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) across the state over the mobile phones lead to trap Sarobjit Singh alias Sweety Singh in Rs One crore bribe case. Ramrao Patil the municipal contractor and the complainant in the bribe case had also received the same message on July 18 from the ACB and the same he called the number and registered his case with the ACB.

According to the ACB officials, after getting the demand of Rs three crore from Sweety to save him from getting booked under the Prevention of Atrocities Act as he had taken loans of crores of rupees on the names of Dalits workers and later defaulted EMIs of the loans. As Patil had cheated the Dalit workers brought this case before the National Commission for Scheduled Caste (NCSC) headed by Buta Singh.
When Patil was demanded Rs Three Crore from Sweety to save him from the Prevention of Atrocity Act by influencing the officers of the department.

The same day he received awareness message from the ACB on his mobile saying to register the cases of anti corruption with the ACB and he followed the same route to register his case. On July 18 the ACB received the complaint and on July 22 a case against all the accused was lodged with the CBI also the CBI created a plan and started following the calls made by the Hawala operators and Sweety to the complainant.

The ACB has tie ups with the mobile service providers across the state which sends this awareness message to thousands of subscribers in Hindi, Marathi and English languages which includes the numbers of the ACB control to register the complaints. According to the ACB officials they receive numerous calls from across the state over their 2492 1212 number and in a month in at least five to six raids accused are arrested red handed.

Pravin Salunkhe, the superintendent of ACB said, "We get several calls on our control room number daily and our three officers record their complaint and forward it to the senior staff. After studying the complaint details we plan a trap and arrest the accused. In the case of Sweety Singh contractor Patil called the same number and informed us about the case and accordingly we unearthed the racket."

Meanwhile, the CBI on Saturday conducted searches at the house of Buta Singh’s son Sweety Singh in Delhi and recovered three unlicensed weapons and some live cartridges. A case under the Arms Act has been registered against Sweety at Nizamuddin police station.

Police unaware of deadline, yet to file report on senior citizens

By Pradeep Gupta (Exclusive)

The Maharashtra government is spending crores of rupees on modernization of the police department in order that they can accomplish their tasks smoothly. But the police work itself is slow and shoddy. After a spurt in cases of murder of senior citizens, Commissioner of Police D. Sivanandhan had issued instructions to all police stations to make a report of the number of senior citizen living in their jurisdiction. The report was to be submitted to the DCP Operation at the CP’s office by July 6.

In the last six months, nine senior citizens were murdered. The CP had asked local police stations officials to personally visit the homes of the senior citizens, meet them and record all their details. The shocking fact is that still none of the local DCPs has submitted this report to the police headquarters as yet.

The circular has also asked the local police to verify the characters of the vendors like milkmen, newspaper vendors, drivers, domestic helps, etc of the senior citizens and if possible, with photographs and submit the same to the police headquarters. The circular issued to all the police stations has asked the police stations to record the contact numbers of the neighbours of the senior citizens to help them in times of emergency.

The police chief has asked the police stations to provide all the details handy with the Beat Marshals and order them to visit the senior citizens at least once in a week. The senior citizens have also to be informed about the helpline numbers 103 and 1090.

The local police stations have been ordered to arrange a meeting with all the housing society officials and if possible to convince them to install CCTVs for surveillance and to also keep a record of all the visitors to their societies, with the vehicles numbers of the visitors. The societies have been advised to install bio-metric system too.

The senior police inspectors has been asked to keep a vigil against dacoits, thieves, gangsters in their areas who have previous records of crimes in the last five years, through their detection staff. In addition to this, they have been asked to act against those found roaming suspiciously in the localities where senior citizens live.

Meanwhile Sivanandhan told reporters, "It is our main priority to provide security to senior citizens with a fearless atmosphere and we are doing all our best to minimize crime in the city."

More than 14 days after the deadline, DCP officials have failed to submit the report to the DCP operation in police headquarters. Shockingly, when contacted, Amar Jadhav, DCP Operation, was surprised and said, “I have to check about such a circular.”

Indian politician should learn a lesson from US Secreatary, Hillary Clinton

By Pradeep Gupta

Indian politicians, who insist on top security personnel anywhere they go, should learn a lesson from US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who has specially insisted that such heavy security should not be deployed at the Taj, where she is staying during her visit to India.

Sources from Taj security told on condition of anonymity, that before her arrival in India, she had specifically informed them through the US Consulate not to deploy high security, despite the various onerous possibilities in the wake of the recent terror strikes.

However, the state government, which is already on high alert following intelligence reports, does not want to take any risk. They have taken special measures for her security.

Clinton, who arrived yesterday in the city, is staying at room number 110 on the 11th floor of the Taj, where she will stay for three days.

The police and consulate staff will not allow people on that floor, not even hotel staff, without their permission. The surrounding area will be cordoned off by uniformed police, and Crime Branch and State Intelligence staff will keep watch.
Clinton will visit several places, including St. Xavier’s College, besides attending a social programme arranged by the city-based SEVA organization. Today, she will first offer tribute to the 26/11 victims after which she will attend a meet with businessmen, including Ratan Tata.

Police officials have said that anyone found loitering around the area would be hauled off for interrogation.

Rakesh Maria, Joint Commissioner, Crime, said “Police in plain clothes will keep watch on the hotel from vantage points.”

Railways need more Samaritans! Sameer Zaveri, a rail accident victim, has been saving lives time and again on the railway tracks

By Pradeep Gupta

Understandably, there was a huge emotional outcry for those who are died in the terror attacks in Mumbai, but there is another space where similarly gory deaths occur, but the news doesn’t make the headlines. Terrorism, and fighting it, is big on the international agenda, but there is no agency fighting for the poor passengers of Mumbai’s suburban local trains where, on an average, 15 people lose their lives daily.

Mumbai’s population of around 1.25 crore has not brought out even one single person to fight for these innocent victims of Mumbai’s lifeline, except a handicapped good Samaritan, Sameer Zaveri. A safe and secure journey for the 75 lakh passengers is the foremost on his mind.

Sameer Zaveri, has been on a special mission of saving lives for over a decade. Improving the security and the safety of passengers has till date saved over 5,500 lives by sending the accident victims on the tracks to the nearest hospital in time. However, as per the records, around 5,000 commuters die every year in different accidents on the tracks of Mumbai.

According to Sameer, Mumbai attracts people from every nook and corner of the world for employment and livelihood. They all find the train as the cheapest and fastest mode of transport to reach their work destination. While commuting in the crowded trains, some of them die after falling while boarding or falling off running trains, getting hit by poles while hanging outside the doorways, getting run over while crossing tracks, etc. Over 70 per cent of those injured take their last breath on the platforms, thanks to the inhuman attitude of the railway officials, who don’t feel any need to follow the rules to save lives.

There have been numerous incidents when injured passengers’ have had to wait for as much as two hours just to get a stretcher and ambulance to take them to the hospital. In many cases, the dead bodies have remained on the tracks for hours with trains passing repeatedly over them. In the absence of ambulances and coolies, the bodies have to be taken on hand carts. The GRP officials say that they are not at fault as they are not provided with the necessary facilities from the railway department. They don’t even get the amount of Rs.750 per dead passenger from the railways, so they have to pay for the expenses of taking the dead to hospital and completing the last rituals from their own funds.

Recently, Justice Swatantrakumar of the Mumbai High Court passed an order, while hearing the petition filed by Sameer Jhaveri, advising the railway authorities to start a pilot project at Dadar station, keeping an ambulance as well as two doctors for their treatment on standby.

Sameer says that the Mumbai police have their own website to display the pictures of unidentified dead bodies, so that relatives of the victims have at least a chance to claim and finish the last rites of their dear ones. The railway department however doesn’t have any such facility. Sameer has written to the railway administration requesting that it create a website to display pictures of rail victims. Sameer has also filed a petition for the same in the High Court.

A K Sharma, Government Railway Police Commissioner, said, “I cannot make any comment on the railway department but yes, following golden hour rules can definitely save many lives. Sameer Zaveri’s job is really commendable as he is fighting for the cause of the general public. We need more of such people.”

Story Of Sameer Zaveri...

At the age of 18, Sameer lost his legs after being hit by a train while crossing the tracks at Borivli in the absence of a Foot Over Bridge. Two unidentified people took him to the hospital and his life was saved. However, though he couldn’t meet those people again in his life, he realized that without their help he wouldn’t be alive.

As others had saved his life, he decided to save others’ lives. After his recovery he was provided with the Jaipur foot to walk. Later on, he also started visiting hospitals and distributing the artificial feet to them. Till now he has distributed over 5,500 such artificial feet to accident victims.

His efforts have been noticed by various NGOs and he has been awarded the Best Samaj Sevak Award by the former Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. He has been sent to various countries by the Lions’ Club to address social service organizations. He has also shared stages with several business tycoons like Mukesh Ambani, Kumar Magalam Birla and Ratan Tata too.
